Ventura County

Classical Guitar Society

Aug 26, 2009

Guest: Carlos Gonzales

VCCGS celebrates its

11th Anniversary !

Carlos Gonzales, with Robert Boyd (R)

Our August 2009 meeting was held on Wednesday the 26th.  Visit our home page for general details about our purpose, location and past and future meetings.  All are welcome to attend, and admission - as always - is free.

As has been our tradition, our very special guest for this anniversary meeting was Carlos Gonzales.  Carlos was instrumental in establishing our classical guitar society in 1998.  Carlos teaches in Ventura County area colleges and privately; he has his own web site here.  Late in the program, he was joined by Robert Boyd, an area flamenco performer and instructor; Robert’s web site is here

Our group has been meeting for 11 years, and most of the meetings have been held in our current venue at the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Parks Senior Center.  We are very grateful for allowing us to use their spaces once a month.

Because this was an anniversary meeting, we arranged to have more break time in order to socialize, and to view a number of displays about the history of the Ventura County Classical Guitar Society.  The first portion of our program included the following from-the-floor performances:

Program - First Part

Ensemble:  Angele Blanton, Jean Desilets, Gail DeWolfe, Larry Conley

From and Old Manuscript, a duet for four guitars

Jesse Davis / Juanita Wooten:  Rondo, Allegretto, a duet by Carulli

Mark Carlile:  Cappricio Catalan, by Albenez

Henry Reed:  Study in A (No. 2), by Sor; and one other piece

André van Meulebrouck:  Milonga, by Cardoso

Richard Reynoso - Richard is both a performer and a luthier.  Richard’s web site.

Program - Gonzales; Gonzales & Boyd

The program for the second part is ill-defined: apologies for any errors.  Carlos played pieces by Sor, Tarraga and other composers.  Carlos and Robert Boyd performed two selections - a Paganni sonata, and another piece by Boccherini.  And Robert Boyd performed a solo in two movements by, I believe, Jose Luis Merlin.

Our meeting for September 2009 will be held on Wednesday the 30th.  Jeff Linsky returns, having last performed for us in 2003.
